Post-Traumatic Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain (PTNP)

2025-12-29

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain (PTNP) is a chronic neuropathic pain condition caused by injury to the trigeminal nerve, most often after dental procedures, facial trauma, or oral surgery.

Symptoms may include persistent burning pain, numbness, tingling, allodynia, altered sensation, and spontaneous or stimulus-evoked facial pain. Diagnosis is based on clinical history, neurological examination, sensory testing, imaging, and established diagnostic criteria such as ICHD-3 and ICOP.

Early diagnosis and appropriate multidisciplinary treatment improve the chances of reducing symptoms and restoring quality of life, although recovery varies from person to person.
