Post-Traumatic Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain

2025-10-30

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain (PTNP) may develop after dental procedures, facial surgery, implants, tooth extractions, or facial trauma involving injury to the trigeminal nerve.

Symptoms may include persistent burning pain, electric shock-like sensations, numbness, tingling, allodynia, and sensory changes. Treatment is multidisciplinary and may include neuropathic pain medications, physiotherapy, psychological support, sensory rehabilitation, and, in selected cases, interventional procedures.

Ongoing research into neuroinflammation, ion channels, glial cell activation, and blood–nerve barrier dysfunction is improving our understanding of PTNP and may lead to more targeted treatments in the future.
